10 June 2022 – 22:00

Canadian singer Justin Bieber (28) confessed, through a video on his Instagram account, that he suffered from a facial paralysis caused by the Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.

Just days ago, the artist canceled concerts scheduled for June 7 and 8 in Canada, due to what was reported, at the time, as “an illness unrelated to Covid-19”.

Given the inconvenience of his fans, the artist uploaded a video in which he shows the facial paralysis he suffers from on the right side of his face.

“This eye won’t blink, I can’t smile with this side of my face, this nostril just won’t move”he explained.

What is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome?

This disease is caused by an infection of the varicella zoster virus to one of the nerves of the head. This produces a rare neurological disorder that derives, primarily, from facial paralysis.

The virus associated with this disease is the same that causes cases of varicella or shingles, only by affecting the facial nerve near the inner ear, a completely different disease occurs.

What are the symptoms?

According to the Rare Diseases website, the manifestations of this disease can vary in each case, but the most recurrent is the facial paralysis. This symptom weakens or stiffens the facial muscles, affecting the individual’s ability to smile, blink or move your forehead.

On the same site they describe that Other symptoms that may occur are:

  • A rash affecting the ear.
  • Presence of blisters in the mouth, palate, upper part of the throat and ear.
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
  • Pain in the ears that may spread to the neck.
  • Sensorineural hearing loss, which in some cases may be permanent.
  • Hyperacusis, or the feeling that sounds are louder than they really are.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Vertigo.
  • In rarer cases, there may be loss of taste, dry mouth or dry eyes.

If diagnosed, antiviral therapy should be followed to contain the infection. Then, depending on the severity of other manifestations, the course of therapy will be established.

Justin Bieber, for example, reported that he was undergoing therapy to recover some of the mobility in his face.
