We on the editorial team at FayerWayer are big fans of the Amazon Kindle, all thanks in large part to its e-ink display which makes for a surprisingly enjoyable reading experience.
That’s why, when we saw the appearance of the Modos Paper Laptop, we were impressed by the retro simplicity of its proposal, under an idea that seems inconceivable that no one had thought of before.
This laptop, in broad strokes, could be described as an ultra-slim computer with considerable battery life thanks to the fact that it uses the exact same screen as Amazon’s Kindle reader.
Let’s take a look at all the other qualities that make up this project to assess its strengths and opportunities.
This is the Modas Paper Laptop
In recent weeks, the official website of the technology company Modos, originating in the state of Boston, USA, and recently established in January 2022, has become relatively popular, where they have now activated their web portal to advertise their product Lighthouse. : the Paper Laptop.
It’s a computer that won’t opt for an OLED or LCD display for its monitor, but will instead use an e-ink e-ink panel that will display graphics in shades of black and white, just like the popular Amazon Reader:
As we can see in the demo video, the Modos Paper Laptop is at a very early stage in its development, but some of the highlights of this product can already be clearly glimpsed.
The e-ink display promises zero eye strain and brutal battery life. Although they did not give concrete enough details.
Modos currently only works with open source and open hardware products, which will necessarily limit the pace of development of the project.
In the video above we can also see how although the screen can display information from any browser and even play YouTube videos, the reality is that the viewing experience is not the smoothest.

In fact, the very qualities of e-ink panels have always had a considerable lag time that doesn’t exactly make them responsive.
The best example is with the Kindle itself which has noticeable lag times. So we’re guessing the Modos Paper Laptop wouldn’t have a touchscreen.
It will be interesting to follow the evolution of this project closely to see how the final product works.
