A new blow in medicine and an old debate about teaching

The totality of the evidence could not be more telling. There is a famous Spanish proverb that says: “When the river sounds, it is because it brings stones.” And although proverbs do not have the category of principles, they often reflect the truth of what is happening. What is happening in this case, at the Faculty of Medicine of the United Nations, where students of a subject had a new generalized slip in the exam a few days ago. On this occasion, “bochazo” reached 81 percent of the young people who passed the exam.

It is reported that 535 students evaluated the test. 98 passed and 437 failed. Based on the results, some students described the situation as “worrying” and also questioned the “model” used for the assessment. In fact, it becomes almost irrelevant to decide whether the assessments accepted by the teachers of different subjects are correct or not. The problem seems to be deeper.

It has been known for a long time that there is a deterioration in the quality of education, a situation that is certainly becoming worrisome when it can happen no less than in the field of medicine. The water of the river sounded very recently, when some students of the same faculty promoted the implementation of a “Japanese-style strike”, that is, the performance of medical technology training activities, which took place on the stairs. the academic unit.

In this way, as a form of protest against the level of education they received, they decided to make the problem visible by developing a series of courses on sewing and venipuncture, folk medicine, contraceptives, work and heart manifestations, among other activities. widespread bochazo was registered.

As is well known, and as reflected in this paper, medical students have perhaps been among the hardest hit during the pandemic, spending long hours hanging out with teachers via screens, video conferencing and taking exams on the platform. In some cases, while this mode was maintained, they complained that they were not approved after they were unable to join due to technical difficulties. For medical training, it will not be necessary to explain the importance of direct contact with patients, and before that, with teachers.

Of course, the stones brought by the river make a noise. Not only are the huge hits visible, but also the claims of many experienced teachers who protested against this state of affairs and many of whom had their retirements “accelerated” citing age. By the way, this whole panorama reveals, among other things, very bad politicization, has a very high price, which is due to the quality of education that the students of the faculty receive.

These situations occur in a license plate recharge scenario. Since 2015, the faculty has multiplied the number of students tenfold, reaching approximately 33,000. It is argued that this growth has not been accompanied by teachers and classrooms since the cancellation of the qualifying examination. Very few, say about 5 percent, make it to the final year of study.

With facilities unheard of in the programs, in most cases without attendance, one can only worry about the quality of training provided by a faculty that has prided itself on its academic excellence for decades. As has been said here on other occasions, it is to be hoped that the university authorities will correct the courses and normalize the education and training worthy of the youth, while bearing in mind the importance that many countries give to these matters. It is hard to say what it would mean to throw overboard concepts that demand the greatest rigor and perfection in medical research.
